Panama Real Estate Appraisals!

Fire InsuranceWhy should I get an appraisal of my home or condo in Panama?

Fire insurance policies have an 80% coinsurance clause that will affect the $$$ amount you receive in the event of a claim for a fire or covered loss. You must insure the property for at least 80% of the actual $$$ value to receive 100% of the amount of total or partial claim.

For example: Panama Condo valued $500,000, insured for $250,000 (less than 80%)....suffers a loss of $100,000...80% coinsurance penalty for UNDERINSURANCE applied, will be paid $50,000 (50%)...."underreporting penalty" because you insured for 50% of the value.

If your Panama Insurance coverage is issued based on an appraisal from an authorized professional (I have the guy) for at least 80% of the $$$ value....you should not have a problem collecting 100% of any claim!

Prevent InfraSeguro....Get an appraisal!!!!

The following article by Silvia Merida Pellicer of Gogetit.com is a very clear, concise guide to the need for property appraisals here in Panama:

Panama Auto policy must be kept in your vehicle!

Automobile Insurance According to a local news source: "Beginning in February, police and traffic inspectors will be testing a technological program to verify the status of a car’s insurance policy and soon reporting an accident will be automated. Traffic cops will enter the license plate number into a mobile unit and the system will indicate if the car has a VALID policy something that is mandatory by law. If the car does not have a current policy it will be TOWED".

Based on article 236-A of the Panama traffic regulations, from April 3, 2017 the ATTT, be warned that if you do not have your insurance policy in the vehicle and are involved in an accident, they will impose the fine of 100 dollars. For a routine traffic stop, failure to produce a current policy can result in a fine of 50 dollars. Both infractions may result in towing/removal of the vehicle. Please check that you have a current automobile policy in your vehicle!

Lately, I have experienced delays receiving policies from various insurance companies, but we are trying to keep on top of the problem. Please check the renewal dates and call your broker to obtain a current copy of your automobile policy.

Remember to check the "fecha de Vencimento" of your drivers license, Panama Auto Insurance is not valid while driving with an EXPIRED drivers license!

Panama Health Insurance

Health InsuranceAccidental Injury or illness in a country far from home can be a very scary experience. If you are without proper health insurance or cannot demonstrate ability to pay at a local hospital, it can mean the difference between life and death. Imagine lying on a stretcher in the hallway, waiting for treatment, while proof of liquidity is confirmed.....many Expats have paid the ultimate price! Excellent Health Insurance coverage is available to protect you in the Republic of Panama.

High quality hospitals, physicians and medical facilities are available in Panama. Most doctors have been trained in the USA, Canada or Europe and speak English. Be Prepared! Private hospitals and medical professionals expect to be paid and will require some guarantee of payment before treatment. It is not uncommon for medical care to be denied by private hospitals. Without financial resources (cash/credit cards) or proper health insurance coverage, you may find yourself transferred from their hospital to a Panama government facility. The public hospitals are adequate, but Panamanian citizens will have priority over your treatment. Here is an example of a visitor "stuck" in Panama with inadequate coverage:

If you have an existing "Home of Origin" health insurance, some of these carriers from the USA, Canada and Europe MAY provide coverage for emergencies while traveling.
