Following up with definitions after I read and posted Mike Kelly’s letter explaining “Medicare Advantage plan for medical emergencies”, I submit this for your perusal:
If you have an emergency, you should get care from the closest hospital that can help you. In Panama, that hospital may treat you if you have private health insurance or you have to prove “ability to pay”. You should speak with your health insurance broker or the nearest hospital in your barrio.
Medicare Advantage (MA) plans are U.S.-based health insurance plans, so using them outside the U.S., like in Panama, is very limited — especially for medical emergencies. Here’s how it generally works: Using a Medicare Advantage Plan in Panama for Medical Emergencies.
- What might be covered: Some Medicare Advantage plans offer limited worldwide emergency coverage. If you’re in Panama and you experience a true medical emergency, your plan might reimburse you for urgent care out of network. Emergency care is sometimes reimbursed up to a certain dollar amount. You would likely have to pay out-of-pocket first and then file a claim for reimbursement. This applies to emergencies only (life-threatening conditions, severe injuries, etc.).Coverage terms vary significantly by plan — some plans have global emergency benefits, and some don’t. For questions or more information, please send a WhatsApp text to Mike Kelly, International Client Relations Manager at the hospital, at +507-6614-1448.
- What’s not covered: Routine care is rarely covered outside the U.S. Non-emergency care (check-ups, prescriptions, follow-ups) is typically not reimbursed. Ongoing treatments or scheduled procedures will need to be done in the U.S. to be covered. How to apply for coverage or reimbursement (from Panama): Get medical help immediately — choose the nearest clinic or hospital. Save all receipts, discharge notes, and medical reports.
Contact your MA plan’s customer service number (usually on the back of your card) or Mike Kelly and Pacifica Salud!
Ask about their overseas emergency policy and how to file a reimbursement claim. Submit: Itemized bills, proof of payment, medical documentation, and a claim form (your insurer will provide one)
Tip: Suppose you’re planning extended travel or retirement in Panama. In that case, get travel insurance or expat medical coverage because Medicare (including Advantage plans) doesn’t offer consistent support outside the U.S.
